Hawaii Trip - Day 5 : Outrigger Canoe Tour / Luau

Monday was Evan's birthday!  He turned 11.  We kicked off the day with an outrigger canoe / snorkel tour that left right from our hotel.  We paddled just a few hotels over and then were able to get out and snorkel.  We got super lucky and were able to see several turtles swimming around.  It was so neat!  Our guide went down and grabbed several creatures from the bottom and brought them up to show us (a starfish, an octopus, etc).  It was neat seeing them all up close.  After about an hour of snorkeling, another nearby guide mentioned he saw a Tiger Shark close by, so that was our cue to hop back in the canoe and paddle back.  Of course this was when the motion sickness started to catch up to me and I got sick.  I had meant to take some Dramamine ahead of time and just totally forgot.  I definitely learned my lesson!

We spent some more time at the beach / pool after our canoe trip.  Evan really wanted a shovel to be able to dig in the sand.  Since it was his birthday, how I could turn down that request?  He made a turtle in the sand.  Then Em and I decided to make our way back over to the Grand Wailea shops.  She wanted a sweatshirt from Maui, so figured with us leaving soon, we better make sure we grab one now.

That night we went to the Old Lahaina Luau.  They did lots of hula dancing while telling us different stories about Hawaiian heritage.  We were served a four course meal, including 1 traditional Hawaiian course  The food was all delicious.  I think we may have liked the Hawaiian course more than the others!  It was a fun way to wrap up Evan's birthday.
