Hawaii Trip - Day 2 : Road to Hana

While researching things to do on Maui, the Road to Hana was always listed as a must do.  We woke up early on Friday morning and hit the road around 6:00 am.

I had read that the road to Hana took a long time and you needed to get a jump start on traffic if you wanted enough time to see everything.  I made a list of all our must do stops and also downloaded the guide along app beforehand to follow as we went.  I also made sure me and the kids took Dramamine.  The road was super windy, so without taking medicine beforehand, there's no way Em and I would have made it without getting sick.

We started our day with a quick stop at Ho'okipa Beach to watch all the surfers.  There were a ton of them.  Later in the day, when we drove back by, there were a ton of windsurfers at this beach.

Our next stop was Twin Falls.  It opened at 7:00 am and we were there right when they opened.  There were 3 sets of waterfalls you could hike to.  We passed by the second set of falls as we hiked to the farthest, biggest set of falls.

The hike to the last set of falls wasn't bad at all. . maybe 15-20 min.  We had the falls to ourselves when we got there.  Evan debated going for a swim, but since we had such a long day ahead of us, he decided to pass.  It sure was a pretty spot though.

Our next stop was the Garden of Eden.  Unfortunately, it rained on us most of the time we were here, but all the flowers and scenery were so pretty!

From there we headed to the Ke'anae Peninsula for some Aunt Sandy's banana bread and to see the overlook.  The banana bread was served warm and was absolutely delicious!

We drove by the Upper Waikani Falls (aka Three Bears).

By now we were all getting a little hungry.  We passed a roadside stand and stopped for lunch.  Evan saw the coconuts and wanted one to drink out of.  He had been looking forward to drinking out of 1 all trip!

We had made reservations for Waianapanapa State Park that afternoon.  It's a black sand beach.  Evan spent about an hour swimming in the ocean.  The rest of us explored a bit while he swam.  We even found a lava tube to walk through.

Our last stop before turning around was Wailua Falls.  We hiked over to it.  There were a ton of people swimming in it, but Evan wasn't interested and he was the only one of us wearing a swimsuit.

On our way back we made a pit stop at Coconut Glen's for some ice cream.  It was delicious and a nice stop to get out and stretch our legs.

We stopped at a general store too to grab some drinks and I couldn't help but take a pic of Em with our rental car.  She talks about how she would love to drive a jeep.  We had rented one for our entire stay on Maui.  We had lots of jeeps to choose from and she chose this blue one.

We also made a very quick pit stop to get a closer look at some other Rainbow Eucalyptus trees.

There were so many other stops on the Road to Hana that we didn't have time to stop at.  It was a lot of driving (very windy roads), but I'm so glad we did it.  I feel like this drive showed us the best of Maui. The scenery was just unreal.

We were all a bit worn out after all the driving.  When we got back to our resort, we walked over to the shops of Wailea and grabbed some dinner at Pint & Cork and did a little bit of shopping before heading back and calling it a night.
