Merit Trick or Treating

Last Friday, we had our annual trick or treating event up at my office.  My kids look forward to this event each year.  It usually kicks off our Halloween festivities, which makes them love it even more.

The kids walked around with my friend, Michele's girls. . .Brynleigh and Haleigh.

Emily Turns 6!

I can't believe my sweet girl is 6!  Her birthday fell on a Wednesday, so it was a pretty typical school day for her.  We had gone the weekend before and let her pick out a new bike for her birthday, so she just had a present from Evan to open on her actual birthday morning.

Shawn signed up to be watch dog Dad at school on her birthday, so he got to be there all day with her. She loved having him there!  I think it helped make her day a little extra special.  At her school, they aren't allowed to bring in any treats, but her teacher made her feel special.  She got to wear a birthday crown all day, all the kids colored a birthday book for her and she got to stand up in front of the class while all the other kids said things they love about her.
Shawn was thrilled I was taking this picture, can't you tell.

After school, Shawn and her went and picked up some cupcakes and then they headed off to soccer practice.  We followed up practice with her favorite meal. . .breakfast for dinner!  And of course we finished the night off with those cupcakes.

Emily was supposed to have her party with her friends the following Sunday, but we ended up having to cancel it the morning of.  This poor girl's eczema has just been out of control lately and somehow she ended up with an eye infection.  I kept hoping it would be better by Sunday, but it wasn't.  I felt like there was just no way we could have the party.  Of course I felt terrible for her!!!  We ended up not rescheduling simply for the fact that we're so busy coming up, we just really didn't have a free weekend.  She has so many sweet friends though, that came by the house that day and dropped presents off for her.  I told her we would definitely make it up to her!  All I can say is eczema SUCKS, but that's for another post!

Here's a couple pics of the party that just wasn't meant to be.  :(

To Emily On Your 6th Birthday!

Dear Emily,

I can't believe it's already time for another birthday!  And this year you are turning six.  Wow!  This has been a big year for you!  You started Kindergarten and are officially in big kid school.   I'm so proud of what a confident girl you have become.  It took just 2 days of me walking you into school before declaring that you knew exactly where to go and I could just drop you off in the carpool line.  You say hi to everyone and seem to be making friends just fine.  I can't wait to see how much you grow during this first year of school.

You have been a very busy bee this last year.  Last spring you took your last session of swim lessons.  I'm so proud of how much your confidence has improved with your swimming skills.  You also finished up another year of dance.  Dance recitals have become your time to shine!  Right now you're taking a break from dance in order to give soccer another go, but we'll see how long that break lasts.  This summer you tried out a couple of new activities. . .cheerleading and football.  You loved every minute of cheerleading and learning how to do back handsprings.  And after much convincing we signed you up for a football class through school.  You were one of only a few girls in the class, but that didn't stop you.  You enjoyed this class so much.  Gymnastics is still one of your favorite activities as well and it's your only year round activity.  You just moved up to the 6 year old class a few weeks ago.  You are constantly doing handstands and cartwheels.  In the Fall you decided you wanted to give soccer another go, so we signed you up for that.   You are naturally athletic and it's fun to watch you play!  Oh a whim, we also signed you up for girl scouts.  You are in a neighborhood troop and you've only had 1 meeting so far, but I think you will love being a daisy.  I did girl scouts when I was little, so it's fun to see you do it now too.  You have yet to decide on the 1 or 2 activities that you love, but for now you enjoy trying out many different things.

I haven't written much about this on the blog, but the last few months you've had some major skin issues.  You were diagnosed with strep 4 times in a month and a half and during that time your eczema was out of control.  Your Daddy and I have never been so frustrated before.  We kept taking you to the dr. and they kept changing your medication to help fight the strep, the eczema and the staph infections that developed as a result of your eczema.  You had an allergic reaction to 1 medicine during school.  I never want to get another phone call like that from the school nurse! You were constantly itching and in tears most nights because your skin hurt so bad.  We tried changing your diet (no dairy, gluten free, no artificial dyes), but ultimately decided to stop.  We got some medicine that finally worked, but it was only a short term solution.  As soon as you were off it, the eczema came right back.  It's so hard seeing you uncomfortable in your own skin.  You are so tough though because of it.  Since you've had eczema since you were an infant, I just don't think you know what it feels like to have normal skin.  I'm hoping soon we can get all these skin issues figured out as I absolutely hate to see you like this.

You've learned a few new tricks over the last year . .how to whistle and how to tie your shoes.  You are also quickly learning how to spell words and sound out words to begin reading.  I love seeing how much knowledge you have soaked up in just a few short months of being in Kindergarten.  I can only imagine what all you will know by the end of the school year.

You are still a leader and love to be in charge.  This can cause lots of fights between you and your brother.  The two of you love to compete with each other and push each others buttons.  I can only hope this phase is short lived!  You continue to be extremely artistic.  The pictures that you draw always bring a smile to my face and are very impressive.  Both your Pre-K and Kinder teachers have commented how well you can draw.

I love you my six year old!  Even though I constantly ask you not to, it seems you just continue to grow up on me so I'm trying my best to accept it and enjoy each stage.  Happy Birthday my sweet girl.  I hope this is your best year yet!

Love you sweet pea,

Mommy

Fancy Nancy, the Musical

A couple weekends ago, me and Em along with some of our friends went to see the Fancy Nancy Musical at the Dallas Children's theater.  We all went out to brunch first and then headed to the theater.  It was so cute!  All the girls really enjoyed it and there was even an interactive part towards the end of the play.  At the beginning of the second act, they invited up all the kids that had September or October birthdays.  Of course, Em ran up there.  The whole audience sang Happy Birthday to them.  Emily felt very special!  After the play was over all the characters were outside and the girls got to line up and take pictures with them.  It was such a fun day with friends and we'll definitely be going back to see more plays!

Fancy Dress was encouraged.  We didn't get real fancy, but the girls did sport some crowns and wands.

Yesterland Farms

I first heard about Yesterland Farms a couple years ago, but forgot about it until recently.  It's in Canton which is about an hour and a half away.  Since we had no plans last Sunday, I thought it might be worth the drive to check it out.  It was fun.  It was pretty much a big pumpkin patch with a huge corn maze, hay ride, pony rides, petting zoo, playground, slides and more.  I don't think we'll make the trek annually to visit, but I'm still glad we checked it out.

This was a favorite for the kids.  We let them lead us.

This was one of Em's favorites.  She rode it twice.  Evan was too small to go. :(

Evan loved the pony rides!

The kids sure have grown a lot since we first started going to the pumpkin patch.  I love that we haven't missed a year yet.  It's by far one of my favorite fall traditions.
