Just like so many of our other trips, we had this one planned well over a year ago. Courtney and I are always busy planning our next adventure and when we saw that Royal Caribbean was building a new ship, we jumped at the chance to go on it. We had only taken the kids on Disney cruises previously, but we felt that they were starting to age out of those and needed more activities that RC could offer. The Icon of the Seas looked like the perfect choice.
We told the kids just a couple months prior to us leaving. We took them out to brunch and told them we needed ideas on where we should plan our next trip. We had several cruise suggestions and the Icon of the Seas specifically came up. We pretended to look at the schedule and say, oh, funny enough, it looks like 1 trip departs the day after school gets out. We asked if we should book it and they all said yes. Ha. We had to tell them that we already did!
We flew out Friday night after school and stayed at a hotel right by the Fort Lauderdale airport.
The next morning we got up and took a car to the port of Miami. We had an 11:30 embarkation time and it was a super quick process. We watched the muster videos before getting on the boat and were able to check into our muster stations right when we got on board.
We set off to do some exploring before finding a spot at the pool and waterslides.
We cleaned up for dinner and headed to the welcome show before heading to eat. We ate dinner in the main dining room each night. The first night our waiter wasn't very engaging, but he did step it up as the week went on and by the end he was doing magic tricks for the kids. I will say the food in the main dining room was 1 of my least favorite parts of the cruise. I didn't think it was very good, nor did I think there was a lot of variety.
