Evan just finished up his first season of Fall soccer. It's been a bit of a roller coaster to say the least, ha. I originally signed him up hoping he would be on a neighborhood team and get to meet other kids that would start Kindergarten with him. Well, unfortunately, he didn't get on a neighborhood team, but instead a team with boys a few neighborhoods over. Half way through the season though we realized one of the other boys from his team does live in our neighborhood and will go to Kindergarten with him. His team name is Frisco United. There are 8 boys (including him) on the team and let's just say I was shocked at how different boy's soccer at this age is from girl's soccer at this age. The boys are so aggressive and they just push each other around while playing. They are also way more emotional and get their feelings hurt much more easily. Ha.
He practiced on Thursday nights for 45 minutes. At the beginning each practice felt like it was hours long! The boys attention span lasted only about 15 minutes so a lot of practice was spent trying to wrangle them and keep them out of the dirt, get them to stop pushing each other and getting them to stop saying potty words, etc. Oh and listening to them ask the coach every 5 minutes if it was time for a water break. Luckily, by the end it got much better.
The games started off rough too, especially for Evan. Instead of trying to get the ball into the goal, he was more interested in kicking the ball out of bounds and continuing to kick it even after the whistle blew. Then competing against his teammates to get the ball to give to the ref. He really had no concept of the game and when he did score it was usually in the wrong goal.
Midway through the season I had to miss 2 of his games, so Shawn took him alone. I'm not sure what he said to him, but all of a sudden Evan decided to actually listen and play correctly. He did awesome. He started scoring 1 or 2 goals every game (in the right goal) and playing very aggressively. Of course once I came to a game again, his lack of interest started back up which was disappointing since I knew he could play well. Finally towards the end of the season, he started playing really well again at the games. Two games he even scored 4 goals (in the right goal!)
At the beginning of the season, I definitely thought this would be his only season of soccer. But after seeing how much he has improved, I think we're going to sign him up for another go at it this spring. We are hoping to switch to our neighborhood team though.
