To Evan On Your Third Birthday

Dear Evan,

I can't believe another year has gone by and you are turning three

A lot has changed in the last year, but a few things haven't.  :)  You are doing really well with potty training.  You wear underwear at school all day and I can't remember the last time you've had an accident.  We're still putting you in a pull up at home, but we need to transition you to underwear full time.   You aren't the best about telling us when you need to go which results in you going in your pull up at home quite a bit, but I think it's more for convenience than anything.

You are officially in a big boy bed.  I was totally dragging my feet on moving you from your crib, but we eventually did it and haven't looked back.  You have done great ever since. You're still very attached to your lovey and paci.  We are making slow strides with the paci.  You haven't used it at school since you turned 1, but were attached to it 24/7 at home and in the car.  About a month ago, we decided it was time to slowly start weaning you off of it.  You are now only allowed to have it at nap time and bedtime.  The transition has gone better than I thought.  You whined a bit the first few days and you still occasionally ask for it during the day, but for the most part you don't really seem to miss it during the day.  I know bedtime is a whole other ballgame.  I'm not sure when we'll take that leap to get you off it completely, but hopefully not in the too far distant future.

The last few months have been interesting as far as your breath holding spells.  You started doing it at daycare and had all your teachers so concerned.  There was 1 week where you were passing out every day.  Luckily it seemed to be a short term thing and you haven't had an issue since.  I'm so hoping you grow out of these soon!  It's scary to see your child turn blue and pass out!

This spring you started swim lessons at Emler.  It's been a work in progress.  You went into the lessons with no fear of the water, but a few lessons in decided you were scared of going under the water.  A few private lessons later, you seem to be back to where you were and I'm looking forward to seeing you in the pool this summer.  We will be taking a break on the lessons though until next spring.  You also started soccer shots at school.  Since we're not there to see you, we mainly have to take your word (and Emily's, as she can see you from her class) as to how you are doing.  I think you're pretty mixed on this for now.  Through the activities, I'm definitely seeing differences between you and Emily.  You're more cautious and hesitant when it comes to trying new things and you tend to be much more shy as well.  You have much more of my personality when it comes to new situations.

You are still a one man wrecking ball and can destroy a room in seconds.  You're stubborn in that you don't like to pick up after yourself and can often times be defiant which results in you going to timeout.  You know just how to push your sister's buttons and get enjoyment out of doing so.  Yet, when she's not there, you miss her.  You are still my sweet boy though and can make me melt with all the I love you's that you randomly throw out to us.  You give the best snuggles and hugs.  You are a smart little guy and am always amazing me with the things you know.  Your question of the day is "why?"  You want to know the reason behind everything!!  Your teachers tell us you are a leader at school. You seem to have them all wrapped around your finger as well.

You are so mischievous and sneaky.  We really can't trust you to be by yourself.  A few examples. . .one morning you woke up and went downstairs by yourself, got in the pantry and poured an entire bag of cheeze-it's into one of those hot dog baskets and hid in the corner of the dining room to eat them.  Another day, you went downstairs, opened up the fridge, took out the entire carton of eggs and proceeded to line them up on your little table.  Thank goodness you didn't drop any.  And yet another day, you went into our closet, proceeded to go to both sides of the closet and pull about 50 shirts/dresses off the hangers and into a big pile on the floor.

The amount of energy you have is unreal.  I wish every day I had just an ounce of your energy.  You are always on the go and very rarely just sit still.  I've always heard boys are like this, but I really feel like you take it to the next level.

Often times I will ask you if you are my big boy or my baby.  Usually you will tell me you're my big boy, but the truth is, you will always be my baby!  I love you so much, Bud!  You add a lot of spunk and our family would not be the same without you!!

Love,
Mommy
