Anniversary Trip To Fredericksburg

Both Shawn and I knew we wanted to take a trip for our anniversary this year.  We went back and forth for months on where to go.  We talked about everywhere from a Carribean cruise,  to going to Mexico and everywhere in between.  In the end,  we decided the most important thing for both of us was to find somewhere we could get away and just relax.  After months of debating we decided to go somewhere low key and close....Fredericksburg, Tx.  We liked the idea that we could drive instead of having to fly and that it was a really relaxing, low key place.  In the end, it was the absolute perfect trip!!

We dropped the kids off at school early Monday morning and then headed out of town.  We made a quick pitstop in Burleson to drop off the carseats (KK was nice enough to watch the kids for us) and then headed on our way.  We did make another detour in San Marcos to walk through the outlets, but we still made it Frederickburg by early afternoon.  We checked into our bed and breakfast.  We stayed at the Hoffman Haus.  It was such a cute place and was in a perfect location too.  We could walk to Main Street which is where all the shops are.

After checking out our room, we sat and relaxed for a little bit on the porch before heading out to Main Street for dinner.

We ended up at The Auslander Restaurant & Biergarten. Shawn needed to have some German food. We enjoyed hanging out on the patio before heading back to our room. We were both tired and decided to call it an early night.

The next morning we slept in (until 7:30. . haha).  We're used to getting up at 5:30 each day, so neither one of us could sleep in too late.  We took our time getting ready and enjoyed the breakfast that was delivered to our door, via picnic basket, at 9:00.

Around 10:30 we headed out to all the shops.  There are a ton of little, quaint shops on Main street.  We just started walking up one side, stopping in most of them to check them out.  Around 1:00, we decided to take a break and have some lunch.  We stopped at this cute patio restaurant called Bejas Grill.   We could have stayed here forever, had it not been for an annoying bee that would not leave us alone.  After lunch, we continued shopping.

We headed back to our room around 3:00 for a quick nap.  Haha, I told you we just wanted to relax, right.  :)  We headed back out to Main Street around 5:00 and ended up on the patio of Lincoln St. Wine Bar

After a few hours of relaxing on the patio, we made our way to dinner at The Cabernet Grill.  This was probably our latest night.  We stayed out until around 10:00.  :)  Fredericksburg definitely doesn't have a big weeknight crowd, which was totally fine by us.

Wednesday morning we were up around 7:30 again.  After enjoying yet another breakfast, we were out the door ready to go on a hike.  Shawn had found a state park in the area,  Enchanted Rock State Park, and really wanted to hike up the rock.  I'm not usually one to seek this kind of stuff out on vacation, but I was game.  We got to the state park around 10:00 and started our hike.  It ended up being much steeper than I thought it would be.  It didn't help that it was windy and cold!!  But it ended up being a nice change of pace from all the shopping, eating and drinking and was worth the hike once we got to the top.

Upon, making it down the rock, we got in the car and headed back into town.  We made a couple of quick stops at a few stores that were closed the day before and then went back to our room for a quick change.  We headed out for lunch at Hondo's.  This was one of my favorite restaurants.  It was nothing fancy, but just a neat place with really good burgers.

After finishing up lunch, we headed out to the wineries.  Since we went during the week, we knew the wineries would be quiet.  It worked out perfectly though.  We stopped at 3 different ones and at each one there were only a few other people there.  All the employees we spoke to said Saturdays are just insane and not very much fun.  So that really made me glad that we went during the week.   We stopped at Grape Creek Vineyards, Becker Vineyards and Piedernales Cellar.  We did a tasting at each of the 3 and at the last one, we each got a glass and sat out on the patio.   We really enjoyed going to the wineries in Fredericksburg.  We've been to Napa and done tastings out there.  It was fun to see how different the people are in the TX wineries.   We came home with lots of new wine to try.  :)

We headed back into town and stopped on Main Street for some frozen yogurt.  We had seen Silver Creek Beer Garden & Grille the day before and decided to stop and have a drink on the patio.  They had some live music this afternoon.   After hanging out for an hour or so, we decided to check out a restaurant that had been recommended to us, Hill Top Cafe.  It's just outside of town and this ended up being another favorite of ours.  Again, it was a very low-key place with really good food.  In fact, we pulled up to the restaurant and both questioned whether or not we were at the right place. . haha.  After dinner, we headed back to our room.

Thursday morning we packed up and headed back home (but not before getting our last picnic basket breakfast :) ).  I was really excited to see the kids.  This was the first time I've been away from Evan overnight and based on what Shawn's mom told us, it sounded like he was ready for us to be home too.    We made it home in less than 5 hours (that's with a stop!) and enjoyed a few hours of the afternoon before picking the kids up.  Em was super excited to see us and Evan just kept staring at us.  It was almost as if he didn't believe we were actually home.  Haha.

Overall, we had a really great trip and it was just what we needed.  I told Shawn I'm already ready to plan another trip.  :)  Now it's just deciding where to go. . .
