I want to make sure I remember all the details of Evan's birth, so bear with me...
The night before our induction date, I had the hardest time sleeping! I was so anxious. I talked with Shawn and while it was nice to be able to "plan" for Emily purposes, I really didn't like anything else about having an induction date. I felt so much more nervous about what the next day would bring. It made it so much easier when it just happened out of the blue with Em and we didn't really have time to think about what was going to happen.
I was wide awake around 4:30 am and just laid in bed for a little before deciding I might as well get up because there was no way I would be able to go back to sleep. Shawn was up around the same time as me. We both had a lot on our mind! I wasn't able to eat anything 8 hours before our check in time or drink anything 4 hours before. That was tough!
We dropped Em off at school around 7:00 Tuesday morning and then headed off to the hospital to check in around 7:30. They had our room all ready and took no time getting me all hooked up to the monitors and to the pitocin. When I arrived at the hospital I was still dilated to a 3 and not really having any contractions. As soon as the pitocin was started, the contractions started, but they weren't too strong and the pain was definitely bearable. Both my dr. and my nurse recommended I wait to get an epidural until a consistent labor pattern had started and I could feel some pain. My nurse said it's hard to know if an epidural is working if you get it before you have any pain because you have no point of reference. So since I wasn't really feeling much then, that was fine with me. My dr. came in around 8:00 or so and broke my water. Wow, is all I can say about that. They had warned me at all my sono's that I had a lot of fluid, but until it all came gushing out, I had no idea what "a lot" was. Everytime I laughed, moved, etc more and more fluid just came gushing out. Pretty sure I soaked up like 7-8 towels. Definitely not comfortable laying in bed leaking fluid. But in hindsight, I'm so glad it had to be broken at the hospital rather than it having broke on it's own somewhere else. Within a few minutes of my water being broken, my contractions started coming every 3-4 minutes apart and they were intense!! After an hour of really painful contractions, I decided to go ahead and get the epidural. Getting it was much more painful than I remembered it with Em. Maybe it was because I was having lots of painful contractions through it and they needed me to be completely still. The numbing shot was the worst though. And even then, it was definitely worth the few minutes of pain because as soon as I got it, I was in no pain. Shortly after getting the epidural, the nurse checked me and I had already progressed to 5 cm. By now it was around 9:30 am. I couldn't believe how fast things were going at this point and was very confident (along with my dr and everyone else) that we would be having Evan by lunchtime. Boy, were we wrong. . .
