Day 1 : California Here We Come

Monday morning we packed up and headed off to visit our friends, The Hendricks, in California.  I met Stephanie as a freshman at Tech and we were roommates for the next 4 years.   She's one of my best friends.  I hate that she lives so far, but it's fun getting to take trips out to visit them.  This was our second trip out to Sacramento since they've been there.  Stephanie and Luke have a little girl, Leah, who just turned 3.  I have been telling Emily all week that we were going to Leah's house to play.

Our day started early this morning with a 9:00 am flight.  I'll admit, leading up to today, both Shawn and I were very nervous about how Emily would do on an almost 4 hour flight.  We packed more snacks and surprises than we could possibly ever need (and a little Benadryl just in case).  Luckily when we arrived, the security line was fairly short.  This was the first hurdle to overcome.  Emily did great though.  Shawn went first and then Emily.  She walked right through and didn't miss a beat.  Whew, that was way easier than we expected!  Now it was time to wait to board.  We set up camp right by the window so she could watch all the planes land.  She loved pointing out all the planes and between this and walking a few laps in the terminal, we were able to keep her busy.  Before long it was time to board our plane and it was time to tackle the biggest hurdle of all.  We bought Emily her own seat and that was by far the best decision we ever made.  We had a little bit of a hard time getting her to sit down and put her seat belt on, but we were able to tempt her with a snack and soon we were able to get her all buckled in.  The next several hours, we switched between watching movies, coloring, reading books and eating snacks.  Emily didn't enjoy the landing so much and insisted on sitting on Shawn's lap, but overall, Emily was WAY better than we expected!

Once we arrived, it took a bit longer than we expected to get out of the airport and get the rental car, but an hour later we were on the road.  We had flown in to San Francisco and had to make a 2 hour drive to Sacramento.  I had planned for the car ride to be during Em's naptime and before we were out of the airport, Em was passed out.  It couldn't have worked more perfectly.

We finally arrived at the Hendricks house early afternoon and we couldn't have been more ready to just relax after our long travel day.  As soon as we walked in the door, Emily was in heaven!  There were toys galore (ones that we don't have at home) and Luke even set up their bounce house in the backyard.  I was afraid Emily would never want to leave their house with all the fun new things to do.  I did get some great Christmas gift ideas for Em though!  Shawn and Luke took the girl's swimming too while Steph and I did a little bit of baking for our trip the next day.  Emily and Leah got along great.  Both girls did get lessons in sharing during this trip, but overall I think they both loved playing together.  By the end of the first day, Emily was walking around their house yelling "LEAH."

Stay tuned to hear all about our trip to Lake Tahoe. . .
