Road Trip to Big Bend

About 6 months ago, we booked a trip to Sedona, AZ for the week between Christmas and New Years.  We kept thinking surely this whole pandemic thing will be done by then.  Welp, we were wrong.  In fact, it was only getting worse.  Cases were at an all time high.  I went back and forth so much trying to decide if we should still go on our trip.  But the day before we were supposed to leave, I got really nervous about getting on a plane and being so far from home, so we cancelled.  The kids were so disappointed, but I felt like we were making the right decision.

We still wanted to be able to do something fun, so we ended up planning a very last minute road trip. . to Big Bend National Park.  We booked a couple hotel rooms and then left just a few hours later.  Big Bend is far from us, so we planned to drive to Abilene and stay the night and then head to Ft. Stockton the next day.

On day 2, we ended up taking a bit of a detour and driving through Marfa.  We made a pit stop at the famous Prada store.  Just before dark, we finally made it to Ft. Stockton.

We were up early on Day 3 in order to make the 2 hour drive to Big Bend.  We spent the whole day hiking and enjoying the scenery before heading back to Ft. Stockton that night.

We had planned to go back to the park again the next day, but a winter storm warning was in effect, so we decided it was best to head home.  I'm sure glad we did because we would have been snowed in.  The park go 12-24 inches of snow and the roads became impassible.  Luckily, the kids got to see some snow on our drive home.

I'm definitely glad we still took a trip and went to see Big Bend, but I will say, it was far!  If we ever go back, we would definitely need to stay closer to the park and maybe fly in to get us a little closer.  :)
